The SOLO taxonomy is a model that describes levels of increasing complexity in students’ thinking and understanding. Planning learning progressions using SOLO teachers can use the levels and associated verbs as a tool to plan learning progressions, with learning outcomes increasing in complexity.

Extended abstract: demonstrating "The SOLO taxonomy is a model that describes levels of increasing complexity in students’ thinking and understanding. It was proposed by academics Biggs and Collis (1982) after classifying student’s thinking across a range of ages and a range of subjects. SOLO Taxonomy. SOLO Taxonomy (structure of observed learning outcomes) provides a simple, reliable and robust model for three levels of understanding – surface deep and conceptual (Biggs and Collis 1982). At the prestructural level of understanding, the task is inappropriately attacked, and the student has missed the point or needs help to start. The next two levels, unistructural and multistructural are associated with bringing in information (surface understanding).

One model that might prove more useful is the Structure of Observed Learning Outcome (SOLO) taxonomy. It is a model that describes levels of increasing complexity in a learner's understanding of subjects (Biggs, Collis, 1982). It aids both trainers and learners in understanding the learning process. The model consists of five levels in the order of task. Because the SOLO taxonomy describes levels of progressively complex understanding through five general stages that are intended to be relevant to all subjects within all disciplines and has been used by numerous studies (Olive, 1991), the authors deemed it an appropriate rubric for the Making Cones task. The level of response is similar to Askew, Rhodes, & William’s (1997) connectionist approach to … SOLO Taxonomy (Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes) provides a model for different levels of understanding, including surface, deep and conceptual (Biggs and Collis 1982). SOLO Taxonomy supports teachers to classify learning outcomes in terms of their complexity, enabling the SOLO Taxonomy that operates with five numbered progressive levels of competencies.
